Accomplishment Introduction

Huma Sustainability Accomplishments Huma established its first-ever Sustainability Department in December 2022. Larry Cooper, MA, Cert/KM, was appointed as Director, and he was assigned to report directly to the company president. Initial steps included developing our Huma Green Office Policies and Charter. Presentations on the Huma Sustainability Initiative were made to the Huma Executive Team, the Huma Board of Directors, and the Huma full staff. We also established a Huma Green Leadership Team comprising the President, COO, VP of HR, and the Director of Sustainability to meet quarterly, and we formed the Huma Green Team with volunteer staff representing each department to also meet quarterly. The purpose of the Huma Green Team is to provide frontline perspective, support, and suggestions on Huma sustainability issues—which include the environmental, social, and governance (ESG) aspects of our company. We put procedures in place to track water and power use at our Gilbert and Tempe facilities to provide a baseline for future water and power reduction initiatives. We also implemented a formal recycling program in cooperation with the Town of Gilbert. In the first 6 months of the program, we were able to divert over 100 cubic yards (almost 9 dump trucks-full) of paper and cardboard from landfills into the Gilbert recycling program. We also established a Huma Soil Health and Sustainability Workgroup comprising our PhD-level research staff, our CEO, our President, and our Sustainability Director to meet regularly to discuss product development and use specific to advancing sustainability in agriculture.
